Last night was the last chance to view the works of the late Alexander McQueen, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I was lucky enough to have a chance to check it out. It was a surreal, sad and exciting event all at once. The beautifully curated show was a lovely tribute to McQueens life works. It is something I will remember forever. The show attracted 661,509 people in only 3 months, the last week of the exhibit had people lined up all the way to the street. Insane.

It has come and gone. This past Tuesday thousands of people all over the world went one day with no shoes so kids don't have to. It is all in support of TOMS shoes who has a One for One business model, with every pair purchased they give one to a child in need. A group of us here in Quebec walked down Montreal’s busiest street barefoot, it was cold and uncomfortable, but that’s the point. We did it to spread awareness about the thousands of kids that do it everyday without a choice, and how a simple pair of shoes can have a positive impact on their lives.

When watching this video it made me wonder what serendipitous events have occurred in my life. I thought of a few but one stuck out in my mind so I wanted to share it.

A few years ago while living here in Montreal I decided out of the blue that I wanted to get my haircut and I knew an acquaintance who worked at a nice salon and thought maybe she could get me a last minute appointment. It worked out perfectly, they had just gotten a cancellation and if I came right way I could get in.

Just as I finished up I noticed a girl walk to the salon, who had been an old acquaintance, from when I lived in Nova Scotia; I hadn’t seen her in years. I didn’t think she would remember me and since it had been so long I wasn’t positive it was her either, all I knew was that I loved her BOOTS! They were fabulous. Before I could pay my bill she got up right away, “Roshelle, is that you” It had turned out she had just moved to Montreal for a job in footwear, and that day I had taken her canceled appointment that had coincidentally put us in each others path. I told her I loved her boots and the rest is history ☺. Here we are 5 years later through numerous highs and lows on both sides of our lives, she is one of my best friends and has stuck by me through more then some of my friends who I have known all my life. If she had never canceled that appointment, this serendipitous event may have never occurred and we may not have ever become such good friends. I can’t even imagine my life without her now.

Looking back, I tried to think about what was going on in my life that day that had brought me to this fortunate encounter; it was not simply serendipity there were a lot of things that factor in. I was in a particularly good mood that day for some reason, so my energy was high which is exactly why I decided on the fly to go pamper myself. It also had that “people come into your life for a reason” element. I had only gone to that salon after my friend at the time suggested it. It turns out I never see or talk to that friend anymore, not for any particular reason I guess she was just meant to be in my life for a season. Above all it was my overall positive energy, I was living in the moment and was not trying to control anything that happened that day. I think this is to me the number one thing you need in your life if you want more serendipitous events to happen to you. I find when I am trying to control everything instead of just doing my best, while hoping for the best, is when I feel the most out of control. It’s pretty ironic in a way, but totally makes sense if you think about it with your "right" brain. ☺

Today I received my first Chloe comme Parris piece from the talented duo's ss/2011 collection. This fantastic jacket is just what I needed this spring to add to my always growing outerwear collection it's detailed, functional and timeless. I was pleasantly surprised today when I opened the package and noticed it has removable zip train, I was unaware of this cool feature until I tried it on. I didn't think it could get any better, but these girls aim to please. They have been referred to as the "Alexander Wang of Toronto" and I am proud to own something designed by these already sought after newcomers.

Designers Chloé and Parris Gordon were the sweethearts of this past SS 2011 LG Fashion Week. The Gordon sisters grew up in Toronto and have both trained at NASCAD University in Halifax Nova Scotia. Chloé, a recent Graduate while Parris is still in her final year. The 20 and 22 year olds have made alot of noise with their debut at the most recent LG fashion week. The globe and mail had said they would be the ones to watch. Even with the pressure Chloé Comme Parris delivered an outstanding sold out spectacle.

If that's not enough to make you want to check out Chloé Comme Parris, I don't know what to tell you. These girls have blown me away I am so proud of them! I blogged about Chloé a year and a half ago when she was still attending NASCAD university and had just begun her Jewellery collection. Even back then she had already been selling in various boutiques across Canada. I was impressed with the detail and originality in her designs. The really interesting thing about These two is their together/separateness when designing. Chloé designs all the garments while Parris focusses on the Jewellery design. They come up with a concept together but design everything seperately, their differences in style and design seems to really compliment one another. Another Impressive aspect to these luxurious garments is that Chloé hand prints and dyes all of the fabrics herself. Chloé has said this collections was inspired by rock textures and explorers from 14th and 15th century. The collection is beautiful. Gareth Pugh’s designs are generally dark, unique, and always tailored to perfection. For this reason, he was rumored to be the late Alexander McQueen’s successor last March; as far as I know that is still just rumor, and either way, he is doing quite alright on his own. I particularly love his jackets. Jackets and coats they are such a staple in places like Montreal, and all over Canada. It's so cold for such a big chunk of the year that people wear them with as much pride as an expensive cocktail dress or fabulous handbag.

The High End , Nautical and Equestrian Brand AIGLE is set to open a flagship store in Montreal - mid October. The line is well known in france especially for their boots. For good reason they come with a fantastic reputation and have been around for over 200 years. They have everything in their stores you need to look the part of a top notch horseback rider, or a seasoned sailer. Their well made boots and foul weather gear are definitely a favorite back in my hometown at the Chester Yacht Club. Karyn Gray is an author. She grew up in a town called Cohasset on the South Shore of Boston. I guess you could say it is pretty white collar. Just to put that into perspective if you have never been, the Kennedy's were basically her neighbors. This is just one reason why her latest book project, Black Sheep: An unconventional look at good ol' family values is so interesting, and totally worth checking out.

As a kid Karyn always felt like the black sheep of her family and in her community. In high school Karyn was a Hardcore/Punk kinda girl living in an in an Abercrombie world. She knew she would take the road less travelled then most of her peers who would most likely enroll in a nearby IV League or Liberal Arts collage. Instead Karyn attended the prestigious McGill University in Montreal, and began pursuing her studies of people in and out of the classroom.

Her interest in subcultures really became more of a lifestyle when she moved to Montreal. She had found her niche, Montreal is driven by it's art and culture. Individuality is a norm that people promote. She found the intellectual stimulation, minus the airy fairies. Honestly, I think you are more so a "black sheep" in Montreal if you are into J.Crew, Top 40, and Sport then, if you are invoved in Tattoo, Hardcore and Art. It's all perspective, and how you fit into the world. Since graduating with a BA in English Cultural Studies, she has worked as Editor-In-Chief of Under Pressure Magazine, a staff writer for Beautiful/Decay Magazine, a contributing music and culture journalist for an array of others, and a freelance editor/writer for both individuals and companies. In 2008 she started her own company GraySide Projects which provides editing and consulting services for a variety of innovative companies and, has now published her own book. Its aim is to bridge the gap between the bourgeoisie and underground subcultures by educating both groups on one anothers similarities in family values. Furthermore she wants to challenge the presumption that people involved in these subcultures (e.g. hardcore, punk, skate, graffiti, tattoo culture, etc.) come from unstable homes or have little/no family values.

The book is a collection of stories and photographs from a variety of individuals involved in these scenes and there families. A few contributors include Melissa Auf der Maur, Penelope Spheeris, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, Freddy Madball, Kevin Lyman, Robert LaSardo, A-Trak and many more.

Alexander McQueen picked this rose before his untimely death in memory of his mentor and friend former tatler Editor Isabella Blow, who also committed suicide back in 2007. Lee McQueen chose this rose out of hundreds of others as the one by which most represented the UK style icon.

This story makes me so sad because it was like a domino effect with Isabella And Lee. Still so Tragic even months Later.

OK so this is kind of Amazing! I am asking my parents for this Chanel inflatable for christmas. I mean for reals, look at that thing. I am sooooooo showing up to a quaker island party on that baby next summer.

Imagine, The new genericized tradename for inflatable tenders being the Chanel instead of the Zodiac.

This is so rad even my dad will love it. The Chanel sport collection also features snowboarding, skiing, cycling and golf equipment among other things. The equipment looks as high end as the iconic brands clothing. I wonder If it actually will stack up against other luxury yacht tenders like the zodiac. I am like mega curious. Research time!

Oddly enough the only reason I even heard this track is because some guys I grew up with directed the video. I have to admit I was totally expecting a mediocre sound from this halifax rapper but was pleasantly surprised when I realized I was mistaken. This song has a dope beat that sucks you in right away, accompanied by clever, honest lyrics from a true poet. I actually think it's my favorite track of the summer. I have it in my head right now(on loop) The song is sick and the video is the perfect compliment to the sound. Although I underestimated the song, I never underestimated the work and creative direction of the Hansen-Macdonald brothers(Luke and Nick) directors of the video. I grew up with these kids and they always impressed me with the kind of stuff they would come up with even when they were prepubescent kiddies. Nick was actually the first person I had ever heard talk about graffiti before my Under Pressure days. They have both dabbled in numerous art forms and still continue to impress the masses. They have a short film debuting at the Atlantic Film Festival in September and two other projects currently in the editing room. Not bad considering they basically both just finished film school and started they're own company called Trinocular Films about a year ago.

So check it out, this song is dope.

Spring has Sprung!

Ok so I’m a day late but spring is here and if you live anywhere in the sun deprived north you feel it. Montreal is sunny and spring like on this beautiful Saturday. Though it's only 2 degrees you will still see people in shorts and t-shirts while having a beverage on a terrasse somewhere. It's because people here are so excited for the warm weather that they relish in the fact that it's coming, therefore convincing themselves it's already here. I packed away all my winter clothes and big jackets to make room in our front hallway for my spring coats yesterday. I don't know if you noticed, but I have a coat problem. Coats and jackets to me are like shoes to Carrie Bradshaw. I found some in the back of my closet I forgot about and it was like Christmas! In any event, later on took my dog for a walk and realized it was still chilly enough that I could have used some mitts and maybe even and extra sweater under my SPRING coat (NOT PULLING WINTER COATS BACK OUT) I refuse. My point, spring is here and it's almost BBQ time, YAY! Some friends and I are having a big one in April and I think about it everyday, I can’t wait to get fat, drink beer, eat baked goods and be outside. All Montrealer’s will come out of hibernation commiserate about their hellish winters while repeating "I'm so excited for summer" over and over, all the while sharing stories of creative and artistic projects they have worked on over the winter to pass the time and keep them from killing themselves. How glorious.

Susan Feindel

Nova Scotian artist Susan Feindel is a free spirited soul who is the kind of artist people want to be like. Susan has dedicated her life to creating pieces inspired by her for view of the world and sharing with the rest of us. She is also the sweetest lady I have ever met. Her latest installation is being featured for the next three months at the Mount Saint Vincent University art gallery in Halifax.

This painting installation was inspired by her voyages on oceanographic research ships, during which the ocean floor is viewed from shipboard using sonar side-scan technology. Unstretched, ink-painted canvases mounted on the darkened floor appear to bleed into the void, suggesting a submerged, downward-looking view of the benthic (ocean bottom) habitat. Complementing these, a series of perforated ink and wash North Atlantic “map” drawings are illuminated from beneath to illustrate the migratory movements of sea creatures. An ambient soundscape composed of scratchy; rummaging sedimentary sounds heightens the sensation of submersion. (Via - MSVU)

Feng Shui

I’m sort of unhappy with life right now. I guess you could say "unpolished" at the moment, so I decided to re-arrange my room. I found a stack of old cds and listened to Madonna's Immaculate collection, while flipping through old photos and ridding my room all the unnecessary trappings in my life. I started reading up on feng shui and I did what I could to invite all the "right" vibes to my room. So far so good I feel like they are going to be good changes. Ill keep you posted in a few months on the progress.

A few weeks ago some girlfriends and I took a road trip down to Boston to be in the presence of New England clam chowder, American grocery stores, the garment district and that awe-inspiring Boston accent. Trust. We also stopped by the Institute of Contemporary Art to see the Latest Shepard Fairy exhibit. Shepard Fairy is the innovative mind behind Obey Clothing, Co-Founder Of Swindle magazine and the street artist behind the iconic Obama HOPE poster that became the face of the Democratic presidential campaign last year. Shepard was already a well-known street artist in the graffiti subculture, but has gained International fame from his work with the Obama campaign. Fairy's work has always been very political. He has created countless provocative visuals that make you question the world around you, always pushing the envelope and Constantly asking the question, who owns public space? I took a few illegal photos’ while at the exhibit to give you a little taste of what to expect when you check it out. You should go.

Travis Taddeo Campaign Launch

Travis Taddeo is an up-and-coming Canadian designer who I blogged about back in December. He showed his line at Montreal Fashion Week this past October. I effing loved his collection! Travis is having a campaign launch party this upcoming week at Teenwolf Tuesdays at Blizzarts on St. Laurent.

Oh Dina Collection!

The Oh Dina! collection is an amazing new headband line created by an innovative young designer who goes by the name of Nicole McInnis. The Nova Scotia native is a third year design student at Ryerson, not to mention a costume design graduate from Dalhousie University. Nicole has been a fasionista and designer for as long as I have known her, dating back to my junior high days when she designed many costumes for local shows and plays in my hometown of Chester. When I saw her headbands I just had to get one and post a blog about them! They are all so beautiful (see below) The recently popular line, according to Nicole, came about from her study of millinery and was really inspired by the the 20's and 40's.

The Oh Dina! collection can of course be found online at ohdinafascinators.etsy.com and also at both Lady Luck Boutiques in Halifax the Historic Properties and Hydrostone Market locations.

So check 'em out and go and buy them up, kiddies!
